Born in Mapo-gu, Seoul, he was educated in Il-mun Preschool and Myung-il Elementary School. In his school days, Bae was a very quiet boy with few friends. He eventually went to study in PaiChai Middle School and Hanyoung High School. [1]
Bae acknowledged that he had a girlfriend named Lee Sa Gang (aka Sagan Lee, Sagang Lee) , and a photograph of her has since been distributed on the Internet.[2] However, according to a 2005 edition of the I-weekly, a MediaCorp owned magazine in Singapore, Bae has since separated from Lee, citing personal reasons. He has since decided to keep his marital status private.[3] Sources, notably HanCinema, maintain that Bae is still single.[2]
Bae's agency, BOF, reported that Bae's apartment at Samseong-dong, Seoul caught fire on May 7 around 8:00 p.m., due to a short circuit. The house was empty when the fire broke out, thus causing no injuries. However, the fire caused damages costing up to 10 million won.[4]

After graduating from the FTM (Film, TV & Multimedia) department in the school of arts in the Sungkyunkwan University, Bae later went onto his film debut in PpilKu in 1994. He later went on to star in dramas like "Salut D'Amour" and "Six Steps to Separation" in late 1994 and 1995 respectively.
He first garnered critical acclaim after appearing in a supporting role on Sunny Place of the Young, where he played the role of the heir to a cosmetics company and best friend of the leading actor, played by Lee Jong Won. Through this role, Bae first gained his now-famous 'regal' image. His next acclaimed role was in First Love, where he played the role of Chan-woo, a smart, young man with checkered past, who drops out of law school to join a gang to seek revenge for his family's misfortunes.
After 1999, Bae decided to step away from acting to focus on his education at Sung Kyun Kwan University, where he majored in film studies.
In 2001, he returned to the small screen, appearing in Hotelier. At this time, Bae decided to let his hair grow long, as evidenced from photographs posted in fan sites.
Bae became world-famous as his next dramatic role, "Winter Sonata," despite the fact that it was a TV drama and not a movie, razed all of Japan with as much as 20% of the country watching it. This popularity gave both Bae and his co-star Choi Ji-woo a chance to shift their main stage from Korea to Japan. Other Korean movies and dramas also became quite popular following the Winter Sonata craze. Bae's role as Kang Jun-sang in Winter Sonata made him the main spotlight of the Korean Wave.
Bae also managed to get a deeper foothold into the Japanese and Southeast Asian market after he starred in the movie Untold Scandal as Jo Won Cho. However, because of several strong sexual scenes in the movie, it did not appeal to the public nearly as much as "Winter Sonata".

Bae Yong-joon to Help Japanese Fans Learn Korean
A game targeting fans of top Korean Wave actor Bae Yong-joon who want to learn Korean will be launched in Japan in January next year. The Busan Metropolitan Government announced Wednesday that multimedia company Mobilero has developed an educational Korean language game starring Bae with funds from it and the Korea Culture and Content Agency. Mobilero paid W400 million (US$1=W1,351) to Bae’s management agency Keyeast for the right to use his image. The game can be installed in portable multimedia handsets, such as the Nintendo DS, and users can learn Korean with Bae through listening, reading and writing. Bae will dub the voice of his character. Baek Seung-hyun, CEO of Mobilero, said the game will cost about 5,000 yen, and that his company anticipates sales of 200,000 packs, worth W10 billion, next year. “If there is a high uptake, we will develop intermediate and advanced-level sequels, and English versions for second and third-generation Koreans living overseas,” said Baek.
Bae Yong-jun to Meet Japanese Fans Via Satellite Broadcast
Actor Bae Yong-jun will meet with his Japanese fans through satellite TV. Bae's management agency said a large-scale fan event entitled "Christmas with Family - Although We're Far Apart" will be held at the Yokohama Arena on December 14. The event will be broadcast via satellite coverage and link Bae with his fans in Japan. Hallyu singer Ryu, Kang Cheol and Woo Sung-min will take part in the event. The special year-end event will also feature never-before-seen footage of Bae's everyday life in Japan during his recent promotional visit. Twelve thousand tickets were sold out almost immediately after ticket sales began.
Nintendo DS to Introduce Yonsama Hangeul Software in January
Actor Bae Yong-joon's management agency Keyeast says it has allowed the portable multimedia devices Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Light the right to use the actor's face and voice for their Korean language education software. Under the latest agreement, Nintendo will release a brand new software program that allows users to listen, read and write Korean with Bae Yong-joon in January. The educational program will be divided into three levels so that users can enjoy a wide range of games according to their level of Korean. "DS Yonsama," the prospective name for the new program will be introduced to the market through an internet shopping mall run by BOF nternational, the Japanese branch of Keyeast. The software will be sold for 5,000 yen and will receive pre-orders. Keyeast says the demand for Nintendo's Hangeul education software is expected to be high. Some 22 million units of the Nintendo DS have been sold in Japan and it is considered a must-have item among women in their 30s. Bae is currently planning to release a travel book and photo book about the "beauty of Korea."
Two Korean hit dramas will be produced as films
The Korean drama Winter Sonata, which helped spur the popularity of Korean pop culture in Asia, the phenomenon known as Hallyu, will be made into a movie, along with another hit drama, Autumn in My Heart. Korean production company Culture Cap Media, which currently holds film rights to the hit TV drama, said it sealed a deal with investment management company Kara & Rich Holdings Korea and Japanese film development and finance company Entertainment Farm to produce a film based on mega hit TV drama series Winter Sonata. Culture Cap Media will handle the production process, while Entertainment Farm will be involved as an investor. The casting for leading roles has not been decided, but Culture Cap Media says the two stars of Winter Sonata, Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, will not be participating in the movie adaptation and new faces will be chosen to add a fresh new feel to the film. After production is complete, the involved companies will start producing Autumn in My Heart as well. Winter Sonata and Autumn in my heart have drawn a large audience in East Asian countries, including Japan. Song Seung-heon and Song Hye-gyo, who played the leading roles in Autumn in My Heart, and Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, the two stars of Winter Sonata, have also been very popular across Asia.
