Actors Ryu Seung-beom and Kim Ah-joong have been cast in the new film "29 Years," based on a comic book by Kang Pul. Production company Cheongeoram said Ryu will take on the role of a macho scamp with a good heart while Kim will take on the role of a cool-headed shooting athlete. The title of the film, which will cover the course of 26 years starting from 1980, has been changed to "29 Years" as the release date of the film has been tentatively set for early next year. Byun Hee-bong will take on the role of "that person," the man responsible for an incident that took place 29 years ago, and Joo Min-mo will take on the role of chairman Kim Kap-seh, who will convict "that person." Other actors who have been cast in the film include Jin Ku, Hang Sang-jin, Ki Joo-bong and Cheon Ho-jin. Film director Lee Hae-young, who wrote and produced "Like A Virgin" wrote the script for "29 Years." The film shoot will begin next month.
South Korea's esteemed 45th Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival held in southern Seoul, showcased the latest local box office trends, with its stronghold of original thrillers, stylistic period pieces and experimental projects. While superstars grabbed the limelight as expected, hitherto overlooked veteran actors and young debutant directors shined the most, suggesting that blatant star power, be it a reputed director or ravishing screen beauty, don't always guarantee ticket sales or awards. The red carpet event took place outside the COEX Convention Hall in a sea of blinding camera flashes as glamorous cineastes filed in. Screen beauties like Han Chae-young, Park Jin-hee and Shin Ae were elegant in cleavage-bearing, long evening gowns while others such as Kim Yun-jin and Ko Ara chose mini-dresses to show off their figures. Actress Kim A-jung, who won last year's award for Best Actress (``200 Pounds Beauty''), and popular announcer Choe Gi-hwan hosted the show. To add more sparkle to the star-studded event, pop group the Wonder Girls took to the stage to deliver bubbly dance music. ``The Chaser,'' the feature film debut of young director Na Hong-jin and the highest grossing film this season, took the festival by storm by winning five of 11 nominations, including those for Best Picture and Director. For Actor Kim Yun-seok, who has endlessly displayed solid acting through supporting roles, his first leading role won him both the Best Actor prize and the BMW Popularity Award. The 40-year-old dazzled the screen as a sullen, disheartened former cop opposite hot young actor Ha Jung-woo. Another murder thriller ``Seven Days,'' the latest homegrown film starring ``Lost'' star Kim Yun-jin, won three of 10 nominations including Best Actress, Sound Effects and Editing. Like ``The Chaser,'' it enjoyed critical acclaim and high sales at the box office earlier this year. Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Yoo Jun-sang (``Return'') and Kim Hae-sook (``Open City''), respectively. The latter star showed off a wild, charismatic streak as an ex-convict in ``Open City,'' breaking away from her usual TV roles as a housewife. The 52-year-old, sexy in a sleek black dress on the night, also received attention for her role as a mother who falls in love with her daughter's former fiance. The romance film ``Viva Love'' won director Oh Jeom-gyun the title of Best New Director and Best Screenplay. Korean cinema and broadcasting have seen a high tide of stylistic period pieces depicting lives and loves from the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). The befittingly named court intrigue ``Shadows in the Palace'' by debutant director Kim Mee-jung won the award for Best Lighting while ``Hwang Jin Yi,'' starring actress Song Hye-kyo as the famed poet and dancer, received prizes for Best Music and Costume. ``M,'' celebrated director Lee Myung-se's striking, surreal story starring Gang Dong-won, received the Best Visuals Award. ``Miracle of a Giving Fool'' starring Ha Ji-won and Cha Tae-hyun, a hit among popular cartoon-turned-movies, won the public vote for Best Hallyu (Korean Wave) Movie. Actor Daniel Henney, who recently finished shooting his Hollywood debut in the ``X-Men'' franchise, was named Best New Actor (``My Father'') and model-turned-actress Han Ye-seul won Best New Actress. A special honor went to Yoo Dong-hoon, president of the Korea Scenario Writers Association, for his lifetime contribution to Korean cinema. Stellar Event Casts Dark Shadows But brightness is always accompanied by dark shadows. Inefficient organization prolonged the running time of the event, and the awardees did not receive sufficient time to express their happiness. The preceding film festival inviting moviegoers to watch movies and meet cineastes at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, May 24-28, was popular and was extended until the 30th. However, the award ceremony itself drew a rather disappointing level of public participation. The annual event recorded a relatively low viewer rating of 11.9 percent through its live broadcasting on SBS. The ceremony caused disorder in the Samseong-dong area where roads were blocked off, and there was sharp criticism of its overly commercial tactic of charging people to vote for the Hallyu Movie Award.
Actress Kim A-jung, left, and actor An Sung-ki are goodwill representatives of the 45th Daejong Film Festival. The Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival ― Korea's equivalent of the Academy Awards ― holds its 45th edition with small film festivals May 24-28 in Seoul and Tokyo before the big award ceremony here June 27. Organizers announced the lineup of movies including 56 works that will enter the competition round in a press conference Tuesday. This year a total of 56 works were submitted of which 30 will be selected for preliminary judgment beginning today through May 28. The final judgment will take place starting June 12 at Seoul Theater, Jongno-3ga, inviting ordinary citizens as jury members. The jury will include nine film specialists and 50 civilians who will choose prizewinners for Best Film, Best Actors, Best Supporting Actors and Best New Actors. Anyone can apply for a spot in the jury through the Web site www.daejongsang.com. The award ceremony will take place June 27 at COEX, southern Seoul. Unrelated to the awards, the Daejong Film Festival will take place May 24-28 at Sangam World Cup Stadium. Co-hosted by the Motion Pictures Association of Korea and Seoul City, the five-day film event will feature free screenings of competing films (both feature and short films); meetings with directors and actors; concerts; exhibition of movie posters and still photos; fireworks and other spectacles. Moviegoers might be able to re-watch popular 2007 movies like ``D-War,'' ``The Happy Life'' and ``Le Grand Chef'' as well as critically acclaimed pieces like ``Secret Sunshine'' and ``Epitaph'' ― all candidates for the 30 contenders. ``Last year we showed two films everyday over a month, but it decreased the participation of cineastes. This year we organized a five-day festival where filmmakers and actors can meet with fans. Next year we hope to increase the timeframe to two weeks,'' said festival director Shin Woo-chul. Movie fans in Japan will also be able to watch Korean films. This year, the Japan-based Korean Movie International Fan Association (KIFA) will also hold Daejong Film Festival Tokyo May 26-30 at Bunkyo Civic Center. The members of KIFA will choose five works from the 56 candidate films for the main competition here, and screen them during the five-day festival. This year, veteran actor An Sung-ki and screen beauty Kim A-jung will represent the festival as honorary ambassadors. ``The festival started out as a small meeting of cineastes who got together for their pure love of cinema. It grew to see its 45th edition already,'' said An, a winner of multiple Daejong Awards including last year's for Best Actor and 50 Years of Acting the year before. ``I feel very close with the festival particularly after winning last year's award for Best Actress,'' said Kim, the star of the international hit movie ``200 Pounds Beauty.'' After her stellar big screen debut, Kim took a yearlong break. ``The rest allowed me to reflect upon things and to spend time with my family and friends. I'd like to visit the audience soon through my next piece, which is most likely going to be a movie,'' she said.
A glimpse of true glamour graced the red carpet at the Blue Dragon Awards last Friday, when Korea’s most beautiful actresses wore some of the most stunning dresses the fashion world could produce. The dress Jeon Do-yeon chose for the awards, where she won the Best Actress award, was a W10 million dress (US$1=W929) by Dior. She had worn a Ralph Lauren champagne gold dress for the Cannes Film Festival, where she also won best actress honors. Before Jeon headed for France, several designers vied with each other for the privilege of dressing her amid rumors that she was likely to land the award. On the day of the festival, Jeon’s stylist sent a text message to Korea: “She picked Ralph Lauren.” The Ralph Lauren team in Korea, and headquarters in New York too, were reportedly delighted. Kim Hye-soo is well known for choosing not just big-name foreign brands but also home-made ones like Kim Yeon-ju and Kang Hee-sook. Jung Ryeo-won chose the less familiar French haute couture brand Jean-Louis Scherrer. It is said that she made the last-minute decision over a Louis Vuitton dress. The stars usually start thinking about what they are going to wear more than a month before they walk down the red carpet, meeting with their stylists and representatives from various designers. Then a couple of dozen dresses ranging in price from anywhere between W5 million and W20 million make their way across the Pacific. They try on about 10 before choosing about three to have them tailored for the final. Thanks to the prearrangements by stylists and brand representatives, no actress will wear the same dress as another. Five actresses attending the 28th Blue Dragon Film Award at the Seoul National Theater last Friday: Kim Yun-jin, Son Ye-jin, Park Si-yeon, Jeon Do-yeon, and Kim Ha-neul (from left). But the same dress can be worn by different stars at different events. The dress Park Si-yeon chose for the Blue Dragon was the same worn by Kim Ah-jung during a ceremony in Hong Kong. And the dress that highlighted Park’s breasts was borrowed from Gucci’s Hong Kong branch. It appears that as long as neither of them is in Korea, wearing the same dress is fine. Many assume that the dress is later given to the stars as it already underwent various modifications to fit them. Surprisingly, however, every dress is returned to headquarters. They are a one-off, like Cinderella’s ball gown. Now, some of these dresses are re-imported to Korea for sale as more and more customers are looking for the dresses worn by the stars. The Ralph Lauren and Gucci branch in Seoul have saw their sales go up thanks to the Cannes winner. This column was contributed by Shin Kwang-ho, fashion news director of Vogue Korea.
Actress Kim Ah-joong has once again proven that she is one of Asia's hottest female stars. The 2007 Elle Style Award Asia, held in Hong Kong on October 26, presented Kim with an award in the 'Hot Face' category. Each year, a panel of judges an....
